Travel Easily (and Cheaply) with Stroller Connectors
I love it when parent product envy is inverted. Case in point: When I took my two young kids to the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., two weeks ago, I counted at least seven covetous glances and overheard three "look at that!" remarks from other parents about my twin-stroller getup. Now, you're probably thinking: Here comes another smug gearhead who's just dropped 500 big ones on some ergonomic masterpiece from the likes of Italy's fashionable Peg-Pérego and has the urge to boast.
Actually, I was pushing a pair of cheapo umbrella strollers ($20 each) hooked together by three plastic Prince Lionheart stroller connectors ($16.85). And while I was delighted to be one-upping Washington, D.C.'s alpha parents for a tenth of the market rate, I can attest to the utility of this approach for more than just trips to the local park or zoo.
We've taken our stroller-sized catamaran through multiple airports on international and domestic trips, where it's a breeze to unclip and rejoin for security checks or boarding, plus you don't have to sweat the fact that your expensive equipment might get dinged by some clumsy baggage handler. And, of course, if your little angels just happen to be in one of those moods—you know, why not lean over and poke your sister in the eye just as she's finally dozing off after a long flight?—you can always separate your strollers and push each kid separately (assuming you're not traveling solo). The only downside I'd note (besides annoying friends with your thrift-induced smugness), is that co-joined strollers can sometimes be a little temperamental with sharp turns and handling. But, hey, for $60, what do you expect—a Ferrari?
