New and Notable Direct Airline Routes

Dublin, Ireland (Digital Vision)

I’ll admit that living in the D.C. area, with its three major airports, has me a bit spoiled when it comes to flying. And if I wasn’t picky about taking only direct flights before, I now have a toddler and another baby on the way, making it even more important. Luckily, airlines continue to offer new direct routes to some fabulous places. Plus, this time of year, they really up their game on seasonal routes to the best ski and beach parts of the world. Here’s a short recap of some new and notable direct flights.

Filed under “Life List”: American Airlines began taking reservations for four new international routes on November 4. If these destinations aren’t on your travel list, get ‘em there quick!

Dallas, Texas (DFW) to Seoul, South Korea (ICN): travel begins May 9, 2013
Chicago, Illinois (ORD) to Dusseldorf, Germany (DUS): travel begins June 12, 2013
New York, New York (JFK) to Dublin, Ireland (DUB): travel begins April 2, 2013
Dallas, Texas (DFW) to Lima, Peru (LIM): travel begins April 11, 2013

Check out our travel guides to Seoul, Dusseldorf, Dublin, and Lima for more info on these life-list destinations.

Filed under “Margaritaville”: Delta, U.S. Airways, and Southwest are all adding more flights to Key West (EYW). Delta will deliver winter-weary New Yorkers directly from LaGuardia (LGA) on December 22, December 29, and January 5 (all Saturdays), and then each Saturday from March 2 through April 6. U.S. Airways will offer service from D.C.’s Reagan National (DCA) daily from December 22 through January 5, and then continue on Saturdays through April. Southwest will add a direct flight from New Orleans (MSY) on March 9, which comes after its announcement that they are now operating AirTran’s direct flights to Key West from Orlando (MCO) and Tampa (TPA).

Filed under “Aloha”: West coast residents got some good news from Alaska Airlines recently—Hawaii just got a little more accessible during the cold winter months. Direct routes from Portland, Oregon, to Kauai; from Bellingham, Washington, to Maui; and from Anchorage, Alaska, to Kona started last week and will continue through early to mid-April.

Check out our travel guides to Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island to get your daydreaming started.

Filed under “Powder Days”: Check out American Airlines’ page on new and seasonal routes, and you’ll quickly see a theme of increased service to ski towns. Direct flights to places like Steamboat Springs, Colorado (HDN), Vail, Colorado (EGE), Jackson Hole, Wyoming (JAC), and Aspen, Colorado (ASE) are smattered all about.

If there’s a particular spot you’re interested in that I didn’t cover here, travel blog Jaunted does a good job of keeping track of new routes.

Thanks! I just checked for cheap flights on the new AA JFK-Dublin nonstop route for April. Looks like AA hasn't loaded the nonstop itineraries yet -- but very excited as i can use my advantage miles to get to Ireland now.
