Balance out a Vacation with a Calorie-Burning Race

Hood To Coast Race
Author Jennifer Maltba Seabolt runs the Hood to Coast race in August 2012

Race series that feature courses in some truly amazing destinations have been popping up all over America (and even the world). One of the fastest growing and most recognizable is the Rock n' Roll Marathon Series. In 2013 the series will have 28 "tour stops" in North America and five stops in Europe. With destinations ranging from Washington, D.C., and Pasadena, California, to Edinburgh, Scotland, and Oslo, Norway, it's easy to mix your need to calorie-burn with your next vacation.

Another option is the Biggest Loser RunWalk Race Series, which kicks off its inaugural event in Panama City Beach this year on New Year's Eve. What better way to start the New Year with a 5K or half-marathon and then finish off the evening watching an 800-pound glowing beach ball drop while you sing Auld Lang Syne with all your new friends? They will also have other Get Fit/Get Ready 5K/10K/15K events and Off-Road Challenges designed by the group that puts on the Spartan Races (more like a mud-run series) throughout the year, too. If you want to get in to running, or like making a vacation out of an event, this looks to be a great new series to test out. I will represent Away.com in the half-marathon with Dan and Jackie Evans from "The Biggest Loser" season five in Panama City Beach, so we'll let you know how it goes!

Almost every city hosts some sort of run, triathlon, relay race, or mud-run throughout the year, so take a look at the calendar and plan a vacation around it to make it a memory of a lifetime!

While these aren't quite the all-inclusive vacations packages I had in mind, I do like the idea of having a fitness-themed vacation that includes seeing the nearby sites, too. Will definitely be adding this to my Vacation Ideas file. Thanks!
